The population swell in refugee camps and shelters have caused multiple problems including disease outbreak. Dysentery, measles, dengue fever, malaria and COVID-19 have been reported.

Just in a week in January 2022, there were 35,319 suspected measles cases of which 91% of the infected were children under 5. [The Straits Times, WHO] It’s hard to imagine because you hardly hear of measles infections in Singapore when we are all vaccinated against this virus as a baby.

Hagar Afghanistan is operating a mobile clinic led by our staff doctor. The team visits the different camps and families to attend to patients’ needs. A growing challenge is the rate of malnutrition and the healthcare system is under severe strain with few hospitals operating. 100s of mothers and children arrive each day seeking treatment for malnutrition.
