Human Trafficking in Singapore

Human trafficking respects no laws and happens even right here in Singapore. Hagar Singapore has been working closely with the local authorities in the Inter-Agency Taskforce on Trafficking in Persons to tackle trafficking issues and to raise public awareness on the matter.

Significant progress in combating this serious crime was seen in Singapore over the last two years. In November 2014, the Singapore government passed a dedicated anti-trafficking bill to deter and punish traffickers. With this piece of legislation, perpetrators can and will be charged under the Prevention of Human Trafficking Act. In the same year, Hagar was appointed to provide training to some 3,300 frontline policemen to improve the identification of trafficked victims, and provide better support to connect agencies that can help these victims.

Since January 2015, Hagar Singapore has been running a trauma recovery programme for girls trafficked to Singapore for sexual and labour exploitation. Supported by the Ministry of Social and Family Development, the programme aims to provide trauma-focused therapy to rescued girls who are awaiting court hearings in Singapore. Hagar Singapore further assists by coordinating their return to their home countries and resettle them in their communities.
